What Is the Webster Technique and How Can It Help Your Pregnancy?

If you are pregnant and researching chiropractic care, you may have come across the term Webster Technique. It is one of the most well-known chiropractic approaches for expectant mothers, and for good reason. Designed specifically for pregnancy, the Webster Technique addresses pelvic balance in a way that can have a meaningful impact on how you feel throughout pregnancy and how your body prepares for delivery.

At Highest Health Chiropractic in Sioux Falls, three of our four doctors, Dr. Nate, Dr. Bailee, and Dr. Sarah, are certified in the Webster Technique. Combined with our neurologically-based approach using the Torque Release Technique, this gives expecting moms access to a level of prenatal chiropractic care that is both specialized and gentle. Here is what you should know about how the Webster Technique works and what it can do for your pregnancy.

The Basics of the Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment developed by Dr. Larry Webster, the founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It was created to address a common concern during pregnancy: sacral subluxation, which is a misalignment of the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of your spine that connects to your pelvis.

When the sacrum is out of alignment, it can create imbalance in the pelvis. The muscles and ligaments that attach to the pelvis and support the uterus, including the round ligaments, can become tense and restricted on one side. This pelvic imbalance can contribute to discomfort for mom and may also affect the amount of space available for the baby to move and position properly in the womb.

The Webster Technique uses a specific adjustment to the sacrum to restore proper alignment, along with gentle soft tissue work on the surrounding ligaments to release tension and restore balance. The goal is not to move the baby directly. Instead, the technique creates the best possible biomechanical environment in the pelvis so the baby has the room and the opportunity to settle into the optimal position for birth on their own.

How the Webster Technique Supports Pelvic Balance

Your pelvis is not a single, rigid structure. It is made up of multiple bones connected by joints and supported by muscles and ligaments that need to work in coordination. During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called relaxin that allows these structures to become more flexible in preparation for delivery. While this is a necessary part of the process, it also means the pelvis can shift out of balance more easily than it normally would.

When the pelvis is balanced, the uterus is supported evenly and your baby has the space to move freely. When the pelvis is out of balance, several problems can develop:

  • Increased lower back and hip pain as muscles compensate for the imbalance
  • Round ligament pain caused by uneven tension on the ligaments supporting the uterus
  • Reduced space for the baby to move, which can affect fetal positioning
  • Greater difficulty during labor if the pelvis is not optimally aligned for delivery

By restoring sacral alignment and reducing the tension patterns that develop around the pelvis, the Webster Technique helps your body maintain the balance it needs throughout pregnancy. Many expecting moms notice a significant reduction in hip and lower back discomfort after beginning Webster-specific care.

The Webster Technique and Baby Positioning

One of the reasons the Webster Technique has gained so much attention in the prenatal community is its association with helping babies move into a head-down position before birth. When a baby is breech, meaning they are positioned feet-first or bottom-first rather than head-down, it can complicate delivery planning and sometimes lead to a recommendation for a cesarean section.

It is important to understand that the Webster Technique is not a breech-turning procedure. It does not involve any external manipulation of the baby. What it does is address the structural and soft tissue factors in the pelvis that may be restricting the baby’s ability to turn on their own. When pelvic balance is restored and the round ligaments are no longer pulling unevenly on the uterus, many babies naturally move into the head-down position because the space and freedom to do so have been created.

Research published by the ICPA has shown a high rate of success in cases where the Webster Technique was used for pregnant women whose babies were in a breech presentation. While every pregnancy is different, addressing pelvic balance gives your baby the best possible opportunity to find the optimal position for birth.

How We Combine the Webster Technique with Neurological Care

At Highest Health Chiropractic, the Webster Technique is one important piece of a larger prenatal care approach. Our doctors also use the Torque Release Technique for every adjustment, which means your care addresses not only the mechanical alignment of your pelvis but also the neurological function of your entire spine.

Your nervous system plays a central role in every aspect of pregnancy, from hormone regulation and immune function to the coordination of labor contractions. When subluxations anywhere along the spine create interference in nervous system communication, it can affect how well your body adapts to the demands of pregnancy. By combining Webster-specific pelvic work with TRT adjustments delivered through the Integrator instrument, we address both the structural and neurological components of prenatal health.

This combination is gentle, safe, and comfortable at every stage of pregnancy. There is no twisting, no cracking, and no uncomfortable positioning. Many of our expecting practice members tell us their adjustment is one of the most relaxing parts of their week.

When Should You Start Webster Technique Care?

There is no wrong time to begin prenatal chiropractic care. Some moms start in their first trimester to stay ahead of the changes that are coming. Others come to us in the second or third trimester when discomfort has increased or when they have learned their baby is in a breech position. Ideally, the earlier you begin, the more time your body has to build and maintain pelvic balance throughout the entire pregnancy.

If you are currently pregnant and dealing with low back pain, hip discomfort, round ligament pain, or concerns about your baby’s positioning, the Webster Technique may be exactly what you need. And if you simply want to support your body in the best way possible as you prepare for labor and delivery, proactive Webster care can help you feel more comfortable and more confident as your due date approaches.

Your Pregnancy Deserves Specialized Care

Not every chiropractor is trained in the Webster Technique.
